Background:
Serving a large rural catchment area of approximately 40 square miles in South Somerset, Stanchester sees itself as 'a truly community comprehensive school' that embraces students of all abilities. The school has 'pioneered inclusive practices' and is the area school for children who use wheelchairs. Twenty per cent of pupils have special educational needs, above the national average. The school is unusual for a secondary in having a nursery school attached to it. It has recently received several national awards, including the Sportsmark Award, recognition by Education Extra as a 'centre of excellence', and Investors in People status. The school is 'heavily' over-subscribed.
