Background:

Founded in 1879, the school moved into a new 'semi-open plan' building in 1974. There is a 'large' hall, television and music room, reference library, computer suite, special needs area and a recently-added extension housing a 'large' infant play area. The building is set in 'spacious, safe and attractive' grounds accommodating an 'award-winning' environmental area with two ponds, a bog garden, a bird hide and various wildlife habitats. Staff believe 'passionately' in providing all pupils with a strong grasp of the curriculum's basic elements, and those with special needs, of whom there are an above average number, are assisted within 'well structured' schemes. Children can receive instrumental tuition. Weekly swimming lessons are sometimes offered and pupils have found success in area tournaments in various sports. Extra-curricular activities include art, French, dance, chess, football, netball, guitar, computer and a choir, which performs in local churches and old peoples' homes. Other community links have been established through the school newspaper and 'tea afternoons', and pupils raise money for various charities. Year 6 pupils have put together their own guidebook to the school and others are involved in a system where they help the dinner ladies for an entire lunchtime. The 'active' Parent-Teacher Association furthers the 'partnership' between home and school and organises fundraising and social events throughout the year.
