Background:
Churchill Community School opened as a secondary modern on its present site in 1957, and became comprehensive in 1970. It is set in rural surroundings in the small village of Churchill, adjacent to the Mendip Hills. It serves a 35 square mile catchment area in the east of North Somerset, drawing a quarter of its students from Weston-super-Mare. Its campus houses specialist buildings for all subjects including a purpose-built sixth form centre opened in 1996, and very good facilities for the performing arts. Churchill is a specialist performing arts college. There is a community sports centre on the site incorporating a sports hall, indoor swimming pool and other facilities. It maintains strong links with its local community, especially through links with local sports clubs and arts groups and organises a range of charity fundraising events. The school aims to provide a happy learning environment with high expectations, where everyone is valued.
