Background:
Founded in 1968, Avishayes began life as an infant school before becoming a primary as the town population increased. It is now over-subscribed and also provides accommodation for the Chard Recreation, Education and Sports Trust Association. The school building is set in 'extensive' landscaped and wooded grounds and comprises six main teaching areas, three temporary classrooms, a central hall, an indoor swimming pool maintained by the 'very active' parent-teacher association, a resources area and changing rooms. There is also an additional needs resources base which includes facilities for physically handicapped pupils, who are also integrated into mainstream lessons. Extra-curricular activities include recorder groups, two choirs, instrumental tuition, netball, football, swimming, aerobics, gymnastics and the 'Mega-Mix Christian Club'. Excellence in sport is encouraged and there are opportunities to compete against other schools. The school prides itself on playing a part in the community and participates in all local and sporting events. It is also keen to create a 'partnership built on trust' with parents, many of whom assist in classrooms.
