Background:
Founded in 1718, Chew Valley is the oldest school in the diocese of Bath and Wells. Its accommodation ranges from a Victorian building which houses three classrooms, to a block built in 1970 for the school hall and administration office, while the reception class and library are in the most recent building, opened in 1996. Three other classes are currently in temporary classrooms and there are plans to build a further extension to accommodate three classes and an IT room. Numbers are increasing and it may be necessary to add to the current six classes in the future. Situated in the Chew Valley within easy commuting distance of Bristol, the rural school has an 'extremely supportive' governing body and a 'thriving' PTA which 'typifies the warm links with the parent body'. Parents play a 'large role' in supporting the school, almost a third of them working on a weekly voluntary arrangement in classes or running after school clubs and cycling proficiency classes. Children from the school are able to take part in a variety of residential visits, and also participate in the annual 'Stages' performances of dance by the Bath and North East Somerset Dance Association which are 'always of an extremely high standard and most entertaining'. Extra-curricular activities available at the school include a bookshop, recorders, chess, theatre workshop, computers, guitar, French and a variety of sports.
