Background:

Located in a residential area south west of Taunton, the large 'family' school was built in 1967 via 'method' construction and has doubled its accommodation and numbers through extensions over the last decade. It remains over-subscribed. The grounds comprise two playgrounds, a playing field, an environmental studies area which is reached via a bridge, a stream and a 'secret garden', including an open-air classroom and theatre. A pond area was converted into an information technology suite and a dance studio with a full-length mirrored wall has been added. Teaching is geared towards each child as an individual and is based around communication skills. Pupils with learning difficulties are identified and assisted by the Special Educational Needs Support Team. Standards for academic work are 'high' and the 'broad' and 'full' curriculum is widened through the teaching of French to older pupils, with Year 6 pupils participating in a residential visit to Normandy. All children attend educational visits and staff are keen for them to relate their education to real life. The 'enviable' music tradition is reflected in the choir, orchestra and annual musical productions. Various sporting and musical clubs are available at lunchtimes and after school, and there is a free homework club twice a week. Children are encouraged to raise money for charities and for the school through events such as discos, and the school is further assisted by the 'active' Friends' Association.
