Background:

Whitstone is the 11 to 16 mixed community technology college serving the Shepton Mallet area. Since the school opened on its present site in 1966, extensive developments have taken place to provide excellent facilities such as the learning support centre, library, music practice rooms, floodlit all-weather pitch and the leisure centre. Whitstone is a caring and challenging school. It recognises the importance of examination success, but it also wish to support the development of the child as a valued, individual member of the community. The school has three dedicated computer suites of multimedia PCs networked with controlled access to the internet. There are computer facilities in most teaching areas and in the learning resource centre, linked to the main network. The school offers a wide range of physical, aesthetic and cultural activities that further enrich the students' learning, leisure and personal development. The school celebrates student accomplishments through a system of commendations. It encourages and motivates students to strive for continual improvement. The certificates, which the students receive, will contribute to their Record of Achievement. Each year a drama production is staged and two concerts are held. All students have the opportunity to join groups travelling abroad. Students also have access to a wide range of educational and leisure opportunities through the adult learning and leisure programmes, based at the sports centre. The aim of the school is to enable individual students to achieve success in a challenging, happy and caring environment.
