Background:

Situated in the village of Pill in the northern tip of Somerset, Crockerne was formed in September 1997 as the result of closure of an infant and junior school, when a new head and staff were appointed. The school is now sought out by parents in neighbouring authorities and SAT results are improving, numbers increasing (there are now 365 pupils) and discipline levels good throughout. The school offers a large number of extra-curricular activities such as French, drama, recorders, singing, handball, netball, cricket, football and the environment, and has experienced particular success at music festivals and soccer tournaments. Children have the opportunity to visit the theatre and to go on trips to places like the Mendip Hills and Belgium. The school is involved in many local initiatives and has been involved in getting work published with a local author. It is also twinned with a Swedish primary school and is soon to achieve Investors in People accreditation. It raises funds for a 'charity of the year', which this year is the Friends of Bristol Oncology Department. Crockerne is a 'green' school, which ensures the children recycle paper and eat 'healthy tuck', and recently obtained a grant to set up a 'senses garden'. It has 'strong links' with local churches and a large number of external links. The school's vision statement is 'Nurturing, learning, celebrating. . together' .
