Background:
Opened in 1871 and housed in a corrugated iron construction the school was known originally as 'the tin school'. In 1895 a new building was built on the current site and is still in use, although it has grown since that time and the school currently has bids to remodel and extend it further. Pupils regularly perform to senior citizens of the town and attend local churches. The school has a good reputation for music, special educational needs provision, and information and communications technology. Fundraising is organised by the Friends of St Barnabas Committee which is made up of staff and parents and also runs a toddlers group, it has recently obtained charity status. The school aims to develop caring, confident, independent individuals who are motivated and committed to life-long learning.
