Background:

Founded in 1847 in the centre of Winford, the school now consists of its original Victorian buildings plus a modern extension, constructed in 1997 in keeping with the old style. About half the pupils come from the village, and the others travel from further afield. Those with special educational needs are assisted by 'well-resourced' staff. Sports events include an annual sports day and competitions against other schools. Swimming is always a feature of the physical education curriculum, and the school boasts an outdoor pool for summer use. Pupils are able to receive tuition in a musical instrument. 'Excellent' relationships have been established with the community and with universities further afield. The school is partnered with Danish and Italian schools in a joint project called 'Ourselves, Our Homes, Our Village, and Our Community', and there are plans to hold video conferencing over the internet with its partners in Denmark. A monthly school magazine allows children to write articles and also acts as a means of communication between school and home. The aim is to 'maintain a partnership' with parents, who are welcome to assist in the classroom. The 'active' Parent-Teacher Association organises fundraising events for pupils and their families.
