Background:
Hugh Sexey Church of England Middle School was founded in 1897 and moved to its current site, in rolling Somerset countryside close to the village of Wedmore, in 1899. It stands in over 17 acres of grounds with play areas, sports field, tennis courts, swimming pool and gardens. The school building houses purpose-built science laboratories, design and technology workshops and specialist rooms for art, music and ICT. It is extensively equipped for computerised learning and has two main computer suites. The school celebrated its centenary in Wells Cathedral and 1,000 people attended. It became a Beacon School in September 2001. It has also won national recognition for its links with industry, despite its isolated location. In 1995 the school set up its own radio station 'Sexey FM' with the help of the local station. There have also been projects with a variety of other companies including Calvin Klein, Sushedo and Coventry City Football Club. An extensive programme of trips, visits, visitors and special events takes place and is varied from year to year. One of the school's regular residential trips recently took students to Sweden. There is a full programme of extra-curricular activities covering sport, music and more. The school aims to serve its community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian practice.
